Philippines - U.S. Ambassador to the Philippines, Harry Thomas, apologized after saying that 40% of male tourists coming to the Philippines because of sex. Statement delivered in a seminar last month that makes the Filipino people angry. Comments were also issued when the Philippine government is working to encourage tourism which is considered less advanced than some countries in Southeast Asia.
Philippine officials were disappointed because their country was described by American ambassador as a sex paradise. United States Embassy in Manila said the ambassador issued a statement regretting it. Through a text message sent to Philippine Foreign Minister Albert del Rosario, Ambassador Thomas said he had improperly made the statement without the support of the data.
U.S. embassy spokeswoman Tina Malone said, "Ambassador expressed remorse. America will still be a partner of the Philippines in combating sex tourism and trafficking," he said as quoted by the Associated Press.
